During our conversation with the lovely Yaba Blay she was asking us about prom and what everyone is wearing. We all told her that we were getting hair put in and curled and she asked us WHY? We sat there stuck because we didn't have an answer for her. Why do females of color get hair added in for special events? What in our heads tell us that when we dress up and get all cute but we can’t work our natural hair? This question got me thinking and when prom came around I realised that every African American female in the room had a weave in. The only people who were rocking their natural hair were the mixed girls and the boys. To this day I still don’t know why, when it’s time to get all fancy and dressed the longer your hair the fancier you look. For me I think it came down to what society shows, females on the red carpet and award shows have hair added in and beautiful big curls and long silky hair. As children we looked up to these people and say we want to be and look just like them. Now in 2016 you do see females who are rocking their natural hair. They’re setting examples for little girls that yes you can rock your fro and yes you can rock your short hair and still look amazing. I’m excited to see wht this natural movement has to offer.
